Abstract

Background: Many studies worldwide have demonstrated a decline in quality of life (QoL) among patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR). This study aims to assess the QoL of patients with DR and explore factors affecting their QoL in Da Nang City.

Methods: The cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between January 2023 and July 2024 among 309 patients with DR who were managed in Da Nang City. The EQ-5D-5L tool in Vietnamese version was used to measure QoL. A multivariate linear regression model was applied to identify factors affecting their QoL.

Results: The median QoL score of the patients with DR was 0.81 (IQR:0.69 - 0.92). The majority of participants experienced pain/discomfort (77.7%), anxiety/depression (62.8%), followed by mobility (53.7%), usual activities (52.4%), and self-care (23.9%). Advanced stages of DR (severe non-proliferative, proliferative, and blindness), older age, and patients receiving insulin or a combination of oral diabetes medications were negatively associated with the QoL score.

Conclusions: The QoL in DR patients is lower compared to both the general population and patients with diabetes mellitus who do not have DR. The QoL decreases with the progression of the disease. Early detection and timely treatment of DR are recommended to prevent disease progression and improve patients’ QoL.
