Abstract
Objective: Describe the knowledge, attitudes the prevention and early detection of stroke among residents of Hue City and identify factors associated with their awareness and attitudes toward stroke prevention. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 646 residents aged 18 years and older in Hue City from August 2024 to October 2024. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire specifically designed to assess medical literacy regarding stroke. Uni-variate regression analysis was employed to determine the factors associated with optimal knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning stroke prevention and early detection.
Results: The average age was 47.96 ± 12.96 years, with an approximately equal gender distribution (48% male and 52% female). 48% of subjects correctly identified six or more risk factors, while 43.5% recognized at least three early stroke symptoms, and 59% had adequate knowledge of stroke prevention strategies. Additionally, 62.8% demonstrated an appropriate attitude toward stroke prevention. Regarding emergency response, 31.7% of subjects appropriately managed a detected stroke case, and 84.2% called emergency medical services (EMS) when recognizing stroke symptoms in themselves or others. Several factors were associated with knowledge of stroke prevention measures, including gender and prior awareness of stroke (p < 0.05). Factors associated with an appropriate attitude toward stroke prevention included age and the presence of chronic diseases (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Knowledge, attitudes regarding stroke prevention and early detection among the general population remain limited. Therefore, it is essential to enhance community-based education programs on preventive measures and early recognition of stroke symptoms.
