Abstract
Background: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are a group of drugs commonly used in the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases today. Medication compliance plays an important role in achieving good treatment results and reducing the burden of disease.
Objectives: 1. To survey on compliance with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of some musculoskeletal diseases at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital; 2. To find out factors related to compliance with the use of non - steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs in the treatment of some musculoskeletal diseases.
Materials and methods: The observational, cross-sectional study was conducted 303 patients diagnosed with musculoskeletal diseases and using at least one non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, treated as outpatients
at the Internal Medicine Clinic, Neurosurgery Clinic and Orthopedic and Thoracic Surgery Clinic, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Interviewed patients directly, assessed the level of patient’s medication compliance using the Morisky - 8 scale.
Results: Of the total 303 patients; 56.1% were female, with an average age of 55.82 ± 17.38 (years). Two common reasons affecting medication compliance were patients stopping medication when they felt their symptoms subsided (32.0%) and forgetting to take medication (25.1%). The rate of medication compliance was 75.6% while the rate of non - medication compliance was 24.4%. Of which, the level of good compliance accounted for 39.3%; followed by the average level of compliance with medication use accounted for 36.3%. Factors related to medication compliance included: age group, gender, education level, living area, number of pills and reminders to take medication.
Conclusion: The rate of patient compliance with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases was quite high. However, to improve medication compliance, better medication counseling and patient education are needed.
