Abstract

Background: The management of cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) is a continuous, long-term process  requiring close coordination between disease knowledge and adherence behaviors. However, data regarding  the relationship between these two factors in the Central region of Vietnam remain limited.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the current status of medication knowledge and adherence, and to  analyze the relationship between them in outpatients treated for CMDs.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 329 outpatients diagnosed with CMDs at  Hue University Hospital of Medicine and Pharmacy from July 2024 to September 2024.

Results: The medication adherence rate was high (90.9%); however, only 58.7% of patients demonstrated good medication knowledge (score ≥ 6). The primary barriers to adherence were busy schedules (43.5%) and  memory difficulties (36.8%). Notably, patients showed strong treatment commitment, with negligible rates  of intentional discontinuation due to adverse effects or financial hardship. However, knowledge regarding  adverse drug reactions (25.5%) and drug interactions (43.8%) was alarmingly low. Regression analysis showed  no statistically significant correlation between knowledge and adherence scores (p > 0.05).

Conclusion: While adherence rates are high, the significant gap in medication safety knowledge poses  potential risks. Interventions should shift focus from adherence reminders to educating patients and family  caregivers on recognizing side effects and managing drug interactions.
