Abstract

Introduction: Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a highly effective and low-cost intervention aimed at reducing mortality and complications in preterm and low birth weight infants. However, the implementation and widespread use of KMC remain limited.
Objective: To determine the prevalence and associated factors related to the implementation of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in Kon Tum province.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 189 mothers of preterm and low birth weight infants, interviewed using a questionnaire at Kon Tum Provincial General Hospital and Ngoc Hoi District General Hospital from July 2023 to August 2024.
Results: The prevalence of KMC care was 40.7%, with mothers being the primary KMC provider in 62.3% of cases. The average duration of skin-to-skin contact was 18.35 ± 2.59 hours. Factors such as gestational age, infant weight, prior KMC experience, awareness of KMC, and sources of KMC information from healthcare staff were associated with the rate of KMC implementation. Challenges in KMC practice included performing skin-to-skin contact alone, lack of caregiver support, pain or fatigue, especially after cesarean sections, difficulty with follow-up KMC appointments, milk expression, and breastfeeding challenges.
Conclusion: The prevalence of KMC practice at Kon Tum Provincial General Hospital and Ngoc Hoi District General Hospital is low. Improvement areas include enhancing counseling and support from healthcare staff, encouraging family involvement in KMC, and increasing caregiver support.
