Abstract
Background: Prostate cancer is a common malignancy in men with an increasing trend in Vietnam. Transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy remains the standard diagnostic method. However, the high cost of dedicated transrectal ultrasound probes and commercial guidance channels poses significant challenges for implementation in healthcare facilities with limited resources. The use of a vaginal ultrasound probe combined with a self-created guidance channel represents a promising alternative that warrants evaluation of its effectiveness and safety. Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of applying a vaginal ultrasound probe combined with a self-created guidance channel in transrectal prostate biopsy for the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Methods: A descriptive case series study on 32 male patients with suspected prostate cancer who underwent biopsy at the Department of Urology, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from March 2023 to March 2026. Results: Mean age was 73.3 ± 7.8 years. Mean PSA level was 268.5 ± 524.6ng/mL. The prostate cancer detection rate was 75% (24/32 patients), with 75% of cases having Gleason score ≥ 8. The complication rate was 18.8% (6/32), all mild and self-limited (gross hematuria 6.3%, rectal bleeding 3.1%, dysuria/mild| Published | 2026-06-18 | |
