Abstract
Background: Patients are admitted to the emergency department with a multitude of etiologies and varying degrees of severity. The evaluation and classification of severity are crucial for the implementation of appropriate initial interventions. The National Early Warning Score (NEWS) is recommended for widespread use to assess clinical deterioration and predict mortality in emergency departments across numerous countries.
Objective: To investigate the characteristics of the NEWS score and analyze the predictive value of complications of admission to resuscitation and death of the NEWS score in emergency patients.
Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study of 352 emergency patients in Hue University Hospital.
Results: The median NEWS and the proportion of high-risk patients in the ICU admission or mortality groups were higher than those in the non-complication group (p < 0.05). With a cut-off score of ≥ 5, the NEWS score exhibited significant prognostic value for ICU admission, mortality, or combined complications and mortality, with respective AUCs of 0.859, 0.920, and 0.888 (p < 0.001). Patients with a NEWS score ≥ 5 had approximately 18.31 times higher odds of ICU admission, 30.05 times higher odds of mortality, and 24.29 times higher odds of experiencing complications and mortality combined compared to patients with a NEWS score < 5 (p < 0.001).
Conclusion: The NEWS score holds prognostic value for predicting admission to ICU, mortality, or combined complications and mortality. Patients with a NEWS score ≥ 5 are at higher risk of experiencing complications upon admission to ICU admission or death.
