Abstract
Background: Hypertension is the most common chronic disease in the cardiovascular system, affecting human health greatly, which the prevalence rate is currently high and increasing in the world as well as in Vietnam. These disease can lead to various serious complications that affect the patient’s quality of life and pose a challenge to family and society. Objectives: To investigate the frequency of clinical symptoms and syndromes according to traditional medicine and explore some factors associated with the syndromes in hypertensive patients.
Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 198 primary hypertensive patients with inpatient treatment at Thua Thien Hue Traditional Medicine Hospital and Department of Cardiology, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Department of Traditional Medicine Hue Central Hospital.
Results: According to traditional medicine, the frequency of clinical symptoms: back and knee pain (74.2%), nocturia (59.6%), poor sleep (66.7%), red tongue (60.6%), yellow tongue coating (65.2%), thick tongue coating (51.5%), wiry pulse (67.7%) account for a fairly high proportion in hypertensive patients. Yin deficiency of the liver and kidney pattern accounts for 76.8 % which is the highest proportion of TCM symptom patterns. There is an association between: Prolonged nervous tension lack of physical activity and hyperactivity of liver yang (p < 0.05). Prolonged mental stress, lack of exercise, overweight, obesity with liver and kidney yin deficiency pattern (p < 0.05). Salty eating habits, prolonged mental stress, overweight and obesity with phlegm-dampness (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: According to traditional medicine: back and knee pain, nocturia, poor sleep, red tongue, thick and yellow tongue coating, wiry pulse in hypertensive patients. Liver and kidney deficiency are the predominant symptoms in popular forms of Traditional Medicine. And there is a relationship between risk factors: prolonged mental stress, lack of physical activity, overweight, obesity, salty eating habits and clinical forms of hypertension.
