Abstract
Background: Building a standard animal model of gastric and duodenal ulcers with specific pathological levels as in humans for the application of drug treatment trials is very necessary. So this study was aimed to build a Swiss mice model of gastric and duodenal ulcers using the stress method and evaluate the suitability of the built model.
Materials and method: Gastric ulcer was induced in mice for 3, 5, 7, 9 consecutive days by WIRS (Water Immersion Restraint Stress) method. The most optimal ulcer induction time was chosen based on macroscopic, microscopic assessment on mice stomachs and concentrations of biological biomakers related to inflammation including Glutathione and Malondialdehyde. The built model was evaluated for suitability by inducing ulcers under selected conditions to determine repeatability, then observing the lesions after 7, 14, 21 and 28 days to determine the self-healing status over time.
Results: After 9 days, the ulcerative status of the mouse gastroduodenal mucosa met all the evaluation criteria. Without treatment, it took 28 days for the gastroduodenal mucosa to return to normal physiological state.
Conclusion: The model has potential for application for the gastric ulcer treatment studies of research medicines in experimental animals.
