Abstract

Gastric cancer is a common malignant disease with a generally poor prognosis. In addition to relying on clinical factors, endoscopic and pathological characteristics, the abnormal expression of the p53 protein has been associated with both the mechanisms of carcinogenesis and patient prognosis. Objectives: (1) Determine the positive expression rate of p53 protein in patients diagnosed with gastric cancer. (2) Evaluate the relationship between p53 protein expression and clinical, endoscopic, and pathological characteristics. Method: Cross-sectional, retrospective descriptive study conducted on 53 patients diagnosed with primary gastric carcinoma at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital between May, 2023 and April, 2025. Results: The p53 protein was positively expressed in 37.7% (20/53). Expression was significantly higher in patients aged ≥ 60 years (85.0%) compared to those < 60 years (15.0%) (p < 0.05), with no significant difference observed between genders. P53 expression was predominantly found in tumors located in the antral-pyloric region (75.0%), with a size ≥ 3 cm (70.0%), ulcerative lesions (55.0%), tubular adenocarcinoma type (70.0%), well or moderately differentiated (40.0%), and TNM stage III–IV (60.0%); however, these associations were not statistically significant (p > 0.05) Conclusion: The positive expression rate of p53 protein in patients with primary gastric carcinoma was 37.7%. P53 expression was significantly associated with age but not with gender, tumor location, size, morphology, histological classification, degree of differentiation, or TNM stage.
