Abstract
Background: Medical students participating in pandemic response efforts have served as an essential support force during public health emergencies, contributing significantly to the protection of community health. Exploring the reasons behind their engagement not only offers insight into pandemic contexts but also provides guidance for shaping future training and developing professional attributes.
Objective: This study aimed to explore the reasons that influenced nursing students to participate in pandemic response activities, thereby identifying lessons and proposing strategic directions for application in nursing education.
Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using in-depth interviews with 30 students and three focus group discussions with 15 third- and fourth-year nursing students from Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine during the 2021–2022 academic year. Data were analyzed using content analysis.
Results: The reasons why students volunteered to participate in pandemic response efforts were diverse and positive. Key reasons identified included: (1) Desire to contribute; (2) Sense of responsibility; (3) Willingness to gain experience and learn; (4) Self-esteem and professional pride; (5) Response to institutional and social movements; (6) Influence from others; and (7) Desire for recognition.
Conclusion: Nursing students demonstrated strong and meaningful reasons for engaging in pandemic response efforts. These findings provide a foundation for shaping nursing education programs that emphasize experiential learning, foster professional values, build soft skills, and enhance student preparedness for emergencies and disaster response.
