Study on psychomotor development in children with autism spectrum disorder using the Denver II test

Abstract

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impairments in communication, social interaction, and behavior. Understanding psychomotor developmental characteristics in children with ASD is important for early intervention and management.
Objectives: To describes the psychomotor developmental characteristics in children aged 24 to 72 months with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Method: A descriptive study was conducted on 98 children aged 24 - 72 months diagnosed with ASD at Hue Central Hospital between December 2024 and September 2025.
Results: Developmental delays were most prominent in communication-related domains: language delay (100%) and personal-social delay (100%). Additionally, 78.6% of children exhibited fine motor-adaptive delays, and 42.9% had gross motor delays. Moderate to severe developmental delay (DQ < 54) was observed in 53.1% of the children.
Conclusion: Children with ASD demonstrated the most significant developmental delays in communication-related domains, with most children showing global developmental delays of varying severity.
