Abstract
Background: The ossicular chain, consisting of the malleus, incus, and stapes, transmits sound to the inner ear through their articulations. Ossicular damage may occur following infection, trauma, or congenital anomalies. Various materials have been used for ossiculoplasty.
Objectives: to investigate the clinical characteristics, morphological patterns of ossicular lesions, and the outcomes of ossiculoplasty.
Subjects and Methods: Forty patients with 43 operated ears underwent ossiculoplasty at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital between March 2023 and March 2025.
Results:
The mean age was 44.12 ± 16.27 years. The main presenting symptom was hearing loss. The mean preoperative air conduction threshold was 66.86 ± 20.10 dB and the mean air–bone gap (ABG) was 40.52 ± 11.49 dB. The incus was involved in all patients. Autologous materials were predominantly used; titanium was used in one case. Postoperatively, the mean air conduction threshold was 46.76 ± 17.21 dB at 3 months and 41.69 ± 16.43 dB at 6 months. The mean ABG was 23.99 ± 7.94 dB at 3 months and 21.97 ± 7.83 dB at 6 months. After 6 months, 35 patients achieved an ABG ≤ 25 dB.
Conclusion: Ossiculoplasty yielded favorable outcomes and can be further applied in future practice.
