Abstract

Background: Eyes diagnosis is a diagnostic method in Traditional Medicine based on observing the blood vessels in the bulbar conjunctiva. This area is considered a "window" reflecting the state of Qi, blood, and the Zang-fu organs, offering a comprehensive approach to diagnosing Uterine leiomyoma according to Traditional Medicine principles.

Objectives: To describe the characteristics of color and morphology of bulbar conjunctival vessels at the 6 o'clock position using the eyes diagnosis method, and to describe some associated Traditional Medicine syndromes in patients with Uterine leiomyoma.

Material and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 134 inpatients diagnosed with Uterine leiomyoma confirmed by histopathological examination at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital.

Results: The syndromes of Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis (38.1%) and Qi Deficiency with Blood Stasis (36.6%) accounted for the majority; Damp-Heat stasis (20.9%) and Phlegm-Dampness Accumulation (4.5%) were less frequent. Bulbar conjunctival vessels at the 6 o'clock position were present at a high rate in both eyes (83.6% left eye; 85.8% right eye). Among these, bright red was the most prevalent color (38.7% left eye; 35.7% right eye), followed by pale red and pink. A tortuous (corkscrew) shape was the most common morphology (37.3% left eye; 35.8% right eye). The presence of a vessel root was observed in 59.8% of left eyes and 58.3% of right eyes.

Conclusion: The characteristic bulbar conjunctival vessels appearing with high frequency at the 6 o'clock position in both eyes, typically bright red or pale red in color, tortuous in shape, and possessing a root, can aid in syndrome differentiation related to the Blood Stasis mechanism in Uterine leiomyoma.
