Abstract
Objectives: 1. To describe the serum total IgE levels in patients with chronic HBV infection. 2. To investigate the relationship between serum total IgE levels and certain subclinical characteristics in patients with chronic HBV infection.
Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 77 patients diagnosed with chronic HBV infection who visited and received treatment at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Additionally, 51 HBV-negative individuals, matched in age and gender with the patient group, were included as the control group for health examinations from April 2024 to November 2024.
Results: The mean serum total IgE level in the patient group was 2118.48 ± 3199.15 IU/mL, which was significantly higher than that of the control group (110.51 ± 73.70 IU/mL), p < 0.05. There was a correlation between total IgE levels and ALT (r = 0.312, p = 0.006) as well as AST (r = 0.265, p = 0.020). However, However, no correlation was found with blood cell indicators or AFP (p > 0.05). A statistically significant difference in total IgE levels was observed between HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative patient groups (p < 0.05). Additionally, in the HBeAgnegative patient group, total IgE levels correlated with ALT (r = 0.545, p = 0.000), AST (r = 0.361, p = 0.011), and AFP (r = 0.352, p = 0.013).
Conclusion: The study results indicate that total serum IgE levels are associated with hepatic cell necrosis and HBV activity. Further research is needed to clarify the role of total IgE in chronic HBV infection.
