Abstract
Background: Ankle fractures are common ankle ịnuries. With the progress in ankle fracture research, new knowledge and treatment approaches have emerged, particularly regarding post-traumatic osteoarthritis, which are partly dependent on the surgical treatment outcomes. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the results of surgical treatment for ankle fractures.
Materials and method: Prospective study based on 37 patients who had undergone ankle fracture surgery from April 2022 to June 2023 at Hue University Hospital of Medicine and Pharmacy. All ankles were assessed with X-ray images pre and post-operation, as well as during follow-up visits, the results of treatment are evaluated on the scale of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS).
Results: The average age was 41.16 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.45:1. According to the Denis-Weber classification, type B ankle fractures were the most prevalent, accounting for 54.5% of the 33 cases. Based on postoperative X-ray images, an anatomical reduction was achieved in 91.9% of cases. The union rate on X-ray was 100%, with no cases of nonunion or malunion. Tri-malleolus fractures had worse outcomes compared to isolated fractures of a single malleolus or bi-malleolus fractures. Good to excellent results were achieved in 30.3% and 51.5% of patients, respectively, while 12.1% had fair results, and 6.1% had poor results.
Conclusion: Surgical treatment combining fixation of the ankle malleoli is an effective method for treating ankle fractures. Proper surgical approaches and techniques should be employed to achieve anatomical reduction and prevent complications and sequelae of the injury.
