Abstract
Background: Diabetic kidney disease is a common chronic complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus and is particularly likely to be overlooked at an early stage in outpatient settings, leading to delayed detection and intervention.
Objectives: To determine the prevalence, characteristics, and to analyze factors associated with diabetic kidney disease among outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Material and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 381 outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Phu Vang Medical Center from July 2024 to February 2025. Diabetic kidney disease was classified according to the KDIGO 2022 criteria. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with diabetic kidney disease.
Results: The prevalence of diabetic kidney disease was 24.4%, with stages 1–2 accounting for 79.6% of cases. Statistically significant associated factors included overweight, obesity, longer duration of diabetes, presence of comorbid chronic diseases, non-use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers, poor adherence to physical activity and medication, as well as failure to achieve target HbA1c and blood pressure levels (p < 0.05).
Conclusions: Diabetic kidney disease is prevalent among outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and is closely associated with metabolic factors, comorbid conditions, and treatment adherence. Strengthening regular screening and implementing multifactorial control strategies are essential for early detection and slowing disease progression.
