Abstract
Background: The study was conducted to describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics and surgical results of colon cancer with bowel obstruction complications treatment.
Subjects and methods: A prospective study consisted of 47 patients who were diagnosed intestinal complete/incomplete obstruction operated at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and Hue Central Hospital from December 2021 to December 2024.
Results: The mean age was 65.9, male/female ratio was 1.13/1. Left colon cancer was 2.6 times higher than right colon cancer. Tumor location in ascending colon accounted for 8.5%, in hepatic flexure colon (17.5%), in transverse colon (2.1%), in splenic flexure colon (10.6%), in descending colon (17%), in sigmoid colon (44.7%). For right colon cancer, colectomy with immediate anastomosis accounted for 84.6%. For left colon cancer, this rate was 52.9%. The overall complication rate was 12.8% with no deaths.
Conclusion: Treatment of colon cancer with bowel obstruction remains a challenge. Colectomy with immediate anastomosis is a treatment method that can be applied to some patients with a low complication rate.
